Beatrice Findlay has been merging abstraction with figuration in varying degrees and combinations for decades. While initially, her paintings may suggest purely abstract compositions, closer examination reveals the presence of figures or landscapes. Through the use of multiple layers of paint, impasto, and a wide-ranging palette, Findlay imbues her works with radiant surfaces that evoke contemplation on life energy, the dual nature of man, body and spirit, presence and absence. Her art has been described as having a Zen-like quality, with a great deal of motion occurring in a calm space.
Findlay lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. Her art has appeared in numerous exhibitions across North America and internationally. Solo exhibitions include the Everson Museum of Art (Syracuse, New York), Springfield Museum of Art (Springfield, Ohio), the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs, Fordham University at Lincoln Center (New York) James Gray Gallery (Los Angeles CA) Michael Ingbar Gallery (New York), Gallery Atrium (Stockholm, Sweden) and a traveling exhibition in four museums in Poland. Her work is held in over150 public and private collections including the Palm Springs Desert Museum (Palm Springs, CA) Minnesota Museum of American Art (Saint Paul), Cedars Sinai(Los Angeles), Wells Fargo (San Francisco), Alliance Bernstein (New York), Goodwin Procter (Boston), Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Pudong Shangri-La (Shanghai, China). She has created many commissioned works for individuals and corporations on three continents and is interested in working with different cultures. A native of Winnipeg, Canada she obtained a BFA from the University of Manitoba and then pursued independent study in Toronto, Montreal, and Los Angeles with an emphasis on color structure and human anatomy. In 1976 she immigrated to the United States and has dual citizenship.
